Session 2 - "Memory Care Facility Shopping": The LAW
Dear Student,
Welcome back! This is Session 2 - "Memory Care Facility Shopping": The LAW. Yes, the law. Today, you're going to discover a couple of things you really need to know before you place your loved one in any facility whether it's a nursing home or a memory care unit. ♦♦The first thing you need to do is go to your state government's website or just do a search on your licensing board for nursing homes. When you get to that website, you will find contact information such as a telephone number and email. You may even find a link that rates various facilities. What you want to do is call and talk to a live person and ask them to email you the report on whichever nursing homes you are considering. When you get the reports whether it's by mail or email or even if you just get a verbal report you need to check the complaints. |
♦♦Know that every complaint that is actually filed there are others that probably should have been filed that were not filed for whatever reason. And know also that there's always somebody that it doesn't matter what you do they're going to complain about something!
What you want to do know is how many complaints and how serious were they on a facility you are considering.
The fact that your eggs were over sunny and you wanted them scrambled is not a serious complaint - only a nuisance complaint! You need to discover how the licensing board sees the facility you were considering.
♦♦The second thing you need to do is call your local Health Board or Health Department. Often, that's under a city or county government. Call them and ask for a copy of the last three health inspection reports.
What are the issues and have they been corrected? Are they a minor or they major? If food is being stored at wrong temperatures? That's majo.r Rodents and other critters? Etc.
If either of these reports are negative, you may need to “pencil them off” of the list" unless that is the absolute only alternative you've got.
♦♦Your assignment: Get on the phone, talk to these people and find out what these professionals say.
Write down those answers in your notebook.
♦♦See? As you gain power, you're pretty much not feeling quite as overwhelmed, are you?. You're being armed with usable information as you continue your “Memory Care Facility Shopping.”
Holding up “THIS WAY” signs as you go thru the maze,
