One Child with Autism: His Timeline♦♦ Although autism may not be part of your unique family situation, you possibly know of a family that has someone (or someones) somewhere on the autism spectrum. ♦♦This should be very encouraging to you or them! Be kind and share this article with them.
This short timeline involves one child. A boy, who is ten now. We will call him Blake. ♦♦His mother tells me he almost 4 when he finally “got” potty training. She had spent the previous 2 years in frustration, tears, and up to her eyeballs in soiled and wet clothes. ♦♦ He was diagnosed with autism after that. ♦♦ He is now in fifth grade in special education classes except for P.E., music, and art. This is his 3rd year with the same teacher. ♦♦ I realized he was my pastor’s son after we started attending that church. There he was, blankie in tow, 99% of the time laying down. ♦♦ After providing CEU’s in Texas for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and in the process, studying a number of other challenges, I knew something was wrong, but I didn’t know what. ♦♦ While I was mentally checking off “this and that”, his dad mentioned, from the pulpit, autism. I asked God right then and there, to help me create a game that would engage this sweet, handsome 10 year old with autism. |

I asked God right then and there, to help me create a game that would engage this sweet, handsome 10 year old with autism. ♦♦ That Sunday afternoon in June, I had the idea for Bobcat & Beaver! My protocol was (and is) using fourths of index cards. WOW! The thing could actually play! Simple, subdued, but not boring for adults to engage a child. ♦♦Then I created the entire card game design, sent it to my printer, and ordered a couple of decks of proofs. When they came in, my husband and I opened one deck and played it. (As usual, with most games I design, he beat me!) It was very playable and I was very excited during the long wait of a couple of days for Sunday to roll around. I gave the unopened deck to his mom and told her it was for playing with Blake. She thanked me and nodded her head. She later told me she had no idea if he would or could play it.
This is part of the thank you note I got the following Sunday:

Let’s continue with the timeline.
♦♦ Both parents continue to play Bobcat & Beaver with Blake. He lugs it around and asks to play it.
♦♦ Fast forward to October of the same year. All of a sudden, Blake is beginning to sit up some in church. His blankie is close by. He even allows a few of the kids to make eye contact without covering up with his blankie.
♦♦ Skip ahead a couple of weeks to the first part of November, same year. Blake is 90% or more of the time sitting up in church. After church, I went over to where his mother was sitting and she introduced me to Blake as the person who gave him Bobcat & Beaver.
Folks, he looked at me eyeball to eyeball for several seconds while he had the biggest smile, almost a laugh, that I have ever seen. “Thank You, Lord!”
There are 2 rules of engagement:
1. The right game.
2. Play it together often.
Either you or someone you know needs Bobcat & Beaver. It comes in two sizes, regular U.S. Poker card size and also in giant 6” x 6”. If you are wondering, I gave Blake the regular size.
