"That sounds like a lot of fun," his mother answered. Paul went to the refrigerator and pulled out the package of ready-to-bake cookies. "Paw-Paw's favorite!" He showed his mother. "We will bake them, Paul. You can put them on the pan." She turned the oven to 350 degrees. "Go wash your hands and use some soap." After washing his hands, Paul charged to the cabinet and pulled out his favorite cookie sheet. Something at the other end of the kitchen table caught his eyes. "Is that some sort of game," he asked. "Yes, it is," his mother answered. "Can I play it?" "in a little bit you can play it with Paw-Paw." "I didn't know Paw-Paw could play a game! His eyes don't work!" "Well, last night, while you were sleeping, I too my little hot glue gun and made this game so Paw-Paw could feel it. I let the glue dry overnight so the dots would stay in place. When we get the cookies in the oven, you can wash and dry your hands really well and I'll show you," she said. In 12 minutes, the smell of fresh cookies cooling on the cookie rack permeated the kitchen. "Mommy, I can feel the dots with my fingers! Paw-Paw can do that, too!" |
With hugs and two packages in tow, Paul raced to his Paw-Paw and hugged him. “Paw-Paw, I love you, too!” He answered as his Paw-Paw hugged him and told Paul he loved him.
“I brought you cookies and something you can play!”
Previously, Paw-Paw loved to play games, but he hadn’t been able to do that in years, ever since he lost most of his eyesight.“I show you!” Paul handed Paw-Paw the box with the tactical cards.
“Well, what do we have here?”
“Open it up, Paw-Paw. Open it up!” Paul danced around and squealed in excitement. Others in the nursing home turned their heads at the commotion.
Paw-Paw opened it and felt inside. His face lit up as his fingers felt the tactical game cards. “Is it a game?” He asked.
Paul squealed even louder! “Yes! Will you play it with me?”
“Yes, I will.”
And they happily matched cards until it was time for Paul to go to preschool.
“Dad, I’ll be back in a little while with a blindfold for me and we’ll play dominoes -”
“Just like old times. You learned how to count when we played them.”
“I love you, Dad.”
“And, I love you, too!”
