While visiting with memory care directors and activity directors at nursing homes, the request was made loud and clear: “Can you design something to engage our men? There’s way more women here, but we do have the men. They won’t do the activities for the women because they are too ‘girlie’, but the gals love doing the activities for guys. And most of our men were ranchers.” The challenge was accepted! Folks on ranches normally wear boots. The thought came to me about making this game, Red Boots, and making it a simple puzzle game. Q. How did it become a game for preschoolers and autism? That’s was a natural crossover when preschool teachers said it applies to preschoolers and will help with not only their gross motor skills and hand-eye coordination, but also reading readiness. Also parents and educators of autistic kids said the same them. Q. How successful was the first design? Woefully, horrible! What I put together on this using index cards was one thing. What the finished product was like when I first saw the proof was, well, super busy, even for me! One glance and it was awful! Quick - back to the drawing board. The concept stayed but the execution became very clear and way simpler! |

Good for 1-4 players. Put the pair of red boots together, each pair has four pieces. Memory training and engagement and reading readiness for preschoolers. Eye-hand training coordination. 16 Regular U.S. Poker size cards.
Q. How much supervision is required?
That so depends on the skills of the person, regardless if they are folks with dementia, folks with autism, or even those adorable wiggly preschoolers. My best suggestion is to play it with them, access their abilities, and then adjust accordingly.
