Envelope Grab Fundraiser

I recently talked with a pastor who's preparing for a mission banquet athe end of the month about the fundraiser of an envelope grab. He looked at me rather strange and said “Well he would talk to some folks and that they would pray about it.”.

I certainly don't disagree with that. I think you should pray about everything, including fundraising..

I am reminded of the story of Peter over in  Acts chapter 12. Let me refresh your memory here if you are  drawing a blank with those verses.

Peter was in prison -  asleep with a soldier on either side. He was bound with two chains and there were keepers at the door.

At that exact time the disciples were meeting together and praying for his release from prison. God answered their prayers and an angel woke him - he must have been really sound asleep because the angel had to literally shove him to wake him up. The angel told him to get dressed and put his shoes on and his jacket. He shoved him in a certain direction outside of the prison.

Even Peter wasn't sure he was awake. He really thought he was still sleeping and dreaming.

Realizing he's awake, he goes to that very house where everybody's praying for his release. The servant girl, Rhoda, heard the knocking, went to the door and she was so surprised and so shocked to see him she forgot to open the door. She went back and told the disciples “Peter’s at the door.”

They did not believe her and even told her she was mad. (I think that would be our term for being crazy.)  Peter kept on knocking and maybe they heard his knocking. Maybe it was soft and maybe it was getting louder but they quit their praying long enough to hear the knocking on the door. They went to the door and behold there was Peter just like she said.

If you think they were astonished, you should picture the confusion at the jail! (And you don’t think God’s got a sense of humor?)

The Bible speaks about praying without ceasing and praying over everything and giving thanks.

But sometimes, I found that Christians, including pastors, say they're going to pray about something and they honestly don't. It's their polite and religious way to say “no”. (I would call it lying… Wonder what God calls it?)

I don't sell envelopes and I don't sell pens and there's nothing else to purchase except maybe thumbtacks if you wanted to hang them on the board or a roll of tape and I don't sell either.

In this particular case, I know there are those who have been praying for fundraising so they have a way to go on this mission trip. I wonder who's praying right this minute and this is actually the answer to their prayers?

Back to this pastor.  I don't think he understood that 100 envelopes with the numbers one to hundred written on them so folks could choose which they wanted and each give that amount  would equal $5,050. But, it does.

Cost to do this fundraiser?
  • Package of 100 envelopes you can get for a couple of bucks or less (free if someone’s trying to get rid old business stationary)
  • Magic marker or pen and the time that it would take to write 1-100 on the envelopes
  • Either a table or board with thumbtacks or tape

This would be a simple addition to the mission banquet that would literally multiply the amount of money donated for the meal.

I think I'm going to show the table with the numbers to the pastor so he can look at that and see for himself. He wasn't grasping the fact that when you start adding 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5   all the way up to a hundred that you end up with over $5,000.

Let’s pray. “Father, thank You Lord for Your Word and for your provision as You provided for Peter and his assignment. Just as You provided the way for him to do that assignment, I ask that You provide the ways and the means for these precious leaders of these Christian groups, churches, and  Christian Schools to do the assignment that you have for them. And let them hear the knocking on the door. In Jesus’ Name, amen
