Bible Study for Ministry, Christian Women, and The Pastor's Wife ~ I Am Glad, Part 1
I just heard someone say "We have finished the Thanksgiving season." That someone was me. Immediately, the question came to my mind "Is thanksgiving really a season? Have we just done our duty for the year?" My mama would say "thanksgiving is every day." She was right. There is no time for past tense here, but always presence tense. I am thinking about a lady that was my grandmother's friend when I was a little girl. Grandmother called her friends by their formal names when I was present. (Haven't a clue what she called them when I wasn't around.) So, my grandmother called Gladys Stockton, Mrs. Stockton. I called her Aunt Gladys. I wonder what prompted her mother to name her Gladys. Was it because she was overjoyed at the birth of this child? Think about it, most of us are named because it meant something special to our parents. We name our children because the name means something to us. I asked her one day how she would pronounce her name if it didn't have the "s" on the end of it. She thought for a minute, laughed and said she didn't know. In all these years, I can't remember meeting anyone else with the name "Gladys." Come to think of it, I don't recall very many times people even use the word "glad" or "gladness." Yet, God, The Holy Spirit, thought they were very good words! "Glad" is used 144 times and the word "gladness" 47 times in the KJV. One of those times is in Psalms 9:1-2. "(To the chief Musician upon Muthlabben, A Psalm of David.) I will praise thee, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works. I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High." Another time is Psalms 45:7. "Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows." This verse is used in the New Testament, almost verbatim: Hebrews 1:9 "Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows." Be blessed in The Name above every name, Jesus! I know I am! Linda L Culbreth
