Bible Study - I Am More Than A Sparrow.
Saturday, I went from Missouri to Franklin, Tennessee, and back home again. On the way down there, I stopped at Whitehaven rest area in Paducah, Kentucky. While walking around, I saw a tree with a very unusual trunk - it was swirled or twisted. There was a spot where three limbs joined the trunk about ten feet or so above the ground. On those limbs, right next to the trunk were thorns about three or four inches long. Sure enough, in that protected space, a bird couple had built a sturdy nest. How different are the nests that the little birds, perhaps sparrows, build under my walkway! Seems like they just barely were put there without a whole lot of consideration of safety for the chicks. You see, this spring alone, we have found at least one of each of the following: *Fresh laid egg, broken on the steps eight feet below *Egg with partially developed baby bird in it, broken on the steps *Newborn bird, fallen, no longer alive on those same steps. These verses came to mind as I continued my journey on Saturday: Matthew 10: 29-30 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. and Luke 12:6-7 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? 7 But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows. Here, I see basically the same story, but with one holding a "sale." Two sparrows for a farthing or five sparrows for two farthings. That brought up a question - How much is a farthing worth? When I got home, I compared three Bible Dictionaries and came up with "a small coin of little worth" (A King James Dictionary), "3/8 of a cent" (Smith's Bible Dictionary) and "a penny" (International Standard Bible Dictionary). Anyway you put it together, a farthing [pronounced far-thing] is not worth a whole lot of money, even if we give it the value of a penny! About the only place that I know of that I can actually spend just one penny is at the United States Post Office for a penny stamp! I haven't even seen any penny gumball machines that actually take a penny around in very long time, have you? How many fresh laid sparrow eggs would it take to build a nice omelet? I don't have an exact figure, but I would guess somewhere in the ballpark of "a lot," wouldn't you? How many sparrow feathers would it take to make one sparrow-feather pillow? Again, I don't have an exact figure, but I would again guess somewhere in the ballpark of "a lot," wouldn't you? Yet, my Lord Jesus Christ tells me to fear not and that I am more valuable than many sparrows. He tells me that twice ~ each time it is right after the statement of the fact that God sees and does not forget even one tiny sparrow that falls from his birth nest onto the steps below. God knows about every tiny sparrow, every tiny sparrow feather, and every tiny sparrow egg. But He tells me that I am way more important to Him than many sparrows! Notice in those verses, He makes no exceptions or qualifications! My age doesn't figure in. My size doesn't figure in. My gender doesn't figure in. My social status doesn't figure in. My color doesn't figure in. Only His love for me and you figures into the equation: My worth and your worth is greater than many sparrows in the heart and eyes of our Creator. Thank on that the next time you see a feather, a bird, a bird's nest, or tiny egg, or even hear one sing or chirp. Even those that belong to the tiny sparrow. Prayer: "Lord, sometimes I fill so small in such a big world. I feel small in my own eyes and really insignificant in the eyes of others, even those I love. Thank You for reminding me that I am not forgotten by You and in Your Love I am worth more than many sparrows. In Jesus' Name, amen" Be blessed in The Name above every name, Jesus! I know I am! Linda
